This year, I’ve noticed a huge difference in my level of confidence. I’ve noticed that I feel more comfortable standing up for myself. I feel more comfortable having “difficult conversations”. I feel more comfortable being more open and sharing more of me with others. (Go figure… :-p) I’ve noticed that I feel more confident in my abilities. I don’t constantly second-guess myself the way that I used to do.
The one thing that I can attribute this improvement to is “mirror work”.
In Love Yourself, Heal Your Life Workbook, Louise Hay first introduced many of us to mirror work. She defines it as standing in front of the mirror, looking into your own eyes, and saying positive affirmations aloud to yourself. It is her belief that when you say the affirmations, it is a powerful way to affirm to yourself, which in turn helps to build you up.The first time I had heard about mirror work was a few years ago. At the time, I was doing affirmations, but not really on a consistent basis. I even wrote a guest post on My Pocketful of Thoughts about how powerful affirmations can be. It talked about how affirmations can help restructure your mindset and change the way that you think about yourself. Mirror work takes affirmations up a notch.
At first when I started doing it, I felt a little weird. I thought it would be easy for me to do the exercise considering I had been doing affirmations, but when I looked in the mirror to do them, it was like exposing a nerve. The feelings were more apparent.
When you look in the mirror and start saying the words to yourself, you automatically notice when you don’t feel what you’re saying. You may notice when it is harder for you to say something. You’ll see yourself lose eye contact. You feel an uncomfortable feeling in your stomach. You hear the voice in your head yelling, “Bullshit!!” You know when you don’t believe it. That’s how I felt when I first started, but I kept going, and I can say that now when I look in the mirror and say all of the things that I say, I believe every single word. Now that I believe them, my attitude is a little different and my actions show that.
I Challenge You
I want to challenge all of you who are reading, to give mirror work a try for just one week. It should be the first thing you do every morning when you wake up for the next seven days.Your assignment, is to go to your mirror first thing in the morning and simply say, “I love you so much.” Don’t brush your teeth first. Don’t check Facebook first. Don’t pass Go and don’t collect $200 either! lol I challenge you to think of positive affirmations that you can say about yourself, starting with the words “I am” and finishing it with something like: grateful, beautiful, a child of God, forgiving, abundant, healing, meant for greatness, or anything else.
Notice how you feel when you start to speak and then take note of how you feel while you do the work. Once the week is over, do another assessment of how you feel after having done this for a week. Is it easier for you to do the exercise? Do you feel a slight change in your emotions?I noticed a slight shift in a short period of time. I decided to make this a daily practice. Now, I’ve been doing mirror work just about every morning for several months and I’ve seen a big change. If you notice any positive changes no matter how small, then I would definitely recommend that you continue.
