If you live in a part of the country that is known for bad weather or natural disasters, you need to make sure that you are prepared before emergency situations hit. Even if you live in an area that is relatively safe from nature’s worst calamities, it is still important to protect yourself and your family from disasters that can be caused by human hands, such as social disorder or even the loss of a job. Here is a quick look at five things that will help you to be prepared for the worst emergencies.

  1. Non-perishable Food

    Food is something that is absolutely essential, especially since you more than likely will need a great deal of energy to be able to clean up after a disaster. Since storms won’t always hit the day after you go to the grocery store, make sure that you are always prepared with a stockpile of non-perishable food you can live on until the storm passes. It is usually recommended that people have at least a month’s worth of food for each member of their family, though, more is always better. It is also important to have a 72 hour supply of food and water packed away into backpacks for each member of your family, which will allow for you to get out of your home quickly if there is an emergency.

  2. Battery Powered Radio

    In an emergency situation, you will need to know what is going on around you and where you can go to find help. A battery-powered radio with extra batteries is an excellent way to keep in contact with the outside world when you have no power. A radio is also essential to receive instructions on where aid can be found, and what needs to be done after the disaster has passed.

  3. Clothing and Blankets

    No matter where you live, it is important that you have enough clothing and blankets to be able to handle the coldest possible weather for your area. If your heat goes out for days, you will need to find a way to stay warm throughout the chilly nights until everything is fixed and running again. Even brief exposure to cold weather can cause serious medical problems, especially for younger children and the elderly.
