How to build discipline? In today’s world, it’s a common question. Discipline gives you the freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want! It provides you with the freedom to form habits, grow as a person, and live the life you desire!
Being disciplined, as every good thing on this earth, is difficult to attain. Therefore, you will have to put in the effort to build your discipline. This can be done in a variety of ways. Practicing some kind of sport will boost your discipline level. Choose sports where you will have to interact with other people. By doing so, you will feel the peer pressure. Therefore, you will show up often, and commit to the sport you have chosen. If you want to have a lot of fun, choose a sport you enjoyed practicing when you were little. If you want to be as productive as possible and increase the discipline level significantly, choose a martial arts class!
Martial arts is not a violent sport. The main purpose is to calm the mind and the body, to make you feel safer and it takes discipline to stick with it. So, consequently, you will have the best results with this type of sport. Exercise even if you don’t really want to. Yes, this is the same thing we see when it comes to procrastination. We put off working out for many reasons; usually because it is difficult and we would rather do something easier.
Build a system!
Building a system helps with all habits. You need to have one, in order to create a new, strong habit. But what does a system mean? It mostly is a plan to stick to whatever goal you want to dedicate yourself to. This means you will have to have a plan for every situation you’re in.
For example, you want to eat healthier. How can you create a system to achieve this goal?
- Make a plan! What are you going to eat? When are you going to eat your meals? How will you handle the lunch break? Ask yourself those questions in order to be prepared for anything.
- Have a back-up plan! What will you do if you forget your lunch box? You will have to go to the store and commit you are going to buy healthy foods like veggies and fruits. As a result of having this back-up plan, you will stick to eating healthier
- Reward yourself! You can’t eat just salads and green stuff or you will lose your mind. From time to time, treat yourself with some ice-cream or chocolate bar. Therefore, is going to be easier for you to stick with your plan\
- Forgive yourself when you mess up! You are going to, eventually… we all do! Don’t be so hard on yourself. In other words, admit you’ve made a mistake, and move on with your plan!
Build a keystone habit!
This is how I personally like to do it! I know what you will say “Wait! You said that I need discipline in order to build a habit! You’re contradicting yourself”. And normally you would be right. However, I said, you need to build a keystone habit! A keystone habit will help you build others too. For example, if you build the habit of going to the gym regularly, you will build others too as eating healthier, drinking more water and respecting a sleep schedule!
I built the habit of having a morning routine, which helped me build my discipline! As a result, my workflow has improved, my health is getting better and better, and my personal life is richer!
My morning routine:
I wake up around 5:30 and 6 a.m. every morning (and I make sure that I have a minimum of 7 hours of sleep). One of the hardest parts of the morning routine is to get out of bed! I built my discipline by doing something that I don’t want to do. After I get out of bed, I drink a glass of water. After that, I go to take a cold shower!
This is important, it has to be cold. These showers make you incredibly uncomfortable. As a result, taking them will build your discipline a lot! After my freezing bath, I go and meditate for 10 minutes. During the meditation session, I force my mind to focus only on my breath, and to the end of the session, I repeat mantras. Mantras are a powerful way of rewiring your brain. Lastly, I will read for 30 minutes. You should already know that reading is good for your imagination, focus, and knowledge.
My keystone habit of creating a morning routine helps me build other habits, at the same time. I’m not just having a routine… I take cold showers, drinking water in the morning, meditate, and read. All of these before the clock shows 7. Also, notice that all these habits, demand some level of discipline. So consequently, I build it every day!
You don’t have to follow the exact same pattern as me! Go and have fun with it! The most crucial part is that you get to become disciplined enough to build whatever habits you want to build and live the life that you want to live!

How do you fix a lack of discipline?
After deciding on a goal and devising a plan of action, self-discipline is an enormously vital stage in achieving it. To act on something, one must have a great deal of self-control. This is one of the characteristics that distinguishes individuals who succeed in life from those who fail.
It’s all about conducting some introspection to figure out what’s keeping you from becoming more disciplined. It’s critical to recognize the stumbling blocks so you can work out how to overcome them. Why do you think you need to be more disciplined? What inspires you? What motivates you? Self-discipline is developed by a strong desire to achieve a specific objective.
You’ll have problems keeping concentrated for long amounts of time if you don’t. “What do I want?” “Why do I want this?” “Why do I need to do this?” are some of the questions you should ask yourself. When you despise something, it’s difficult to push oneself – to be disciplined.
A good way to make a commitment to yourself is to write it down. Here is an example, “I pledge to do five minutes of housework every day before watching television”. It is helpful to include a transplant in your commitment: television, for example.
So make the activity enjoyable for yourself. Find some decent music, a workout partner with whom you can have a pleasant chat, or a tranquil place in nature that is simply gorgeous if you don’t enjoy exercising. And keep your attention on the fun side.
What causes lack of self discipline?
Self-discipline is undoubtedly a helpful characteristic if our primary goal with students is to get them to accomplish all of the chores and follow all of the regulations we set them. However, if we are concerned about the complete child – for example, if we value our pupils’ psychological well-being – it is no longer evident that self-discipline should take precedence over other factors. It may even be unsuitable in some circumstances.
Another negative aspect is that appreciating what you have to its actual value may become increasingly difficult. You have a constant sense of dissatisfaction, and you always want more. Moderation and realism start to elude us. You prioritize your own desires over the well-being of others, and your efforts are directed on achieving your sole desires. The simple act of giving in to your impulses and the ease with which you may obtain short-term gains puts you on a slippery slope.
