June 2015 Traffic and Income Report

I’m taking the plunge and decided to be completely transparent about what goes on behind the scenes of A Mom In Training. Blogging has been a big part of my life since 2009 {when I started on Blogger} and this is the first time I’m taking it seriously. I’m actually quite nervous to be publishing information like this. It’s like standing in front of a lot of people in a yellow polka dot bikini without anything to cover me up.

Why am I revealing all this? Because I know there are other bloggers out there who are in the same boat as me! These income reports are not intended for me to brag, boast, or place me on a pedestal. I wanna share what’s working and not working for my blog in an effort to encourage others to keep going! With that said, let’s get down to the numbers…

Income Analysis

Believe it or not, June was actually the most profitable I’ve ever seen in my blogging career.

I took note of what a few other bloggers were doing in their monetization strategies and applied them to my blog. Specifically, I followed this blogger’s tutorial about linking AdSense to Analytics and saw a HUGE spike in AdSense revenue!

I also started selling small items to new subscribers of A Mom In Training. One of my popular posts, How I Organize My Household’s Important Papers, includes a checklist that subscribers can download to help them organize their own important papers. I attached pre-sized file cabinet drawer labels as well as file hanger labels for just $1 if subscribers wanted to use the exact same ones I do.

What was interesting was that about 20 minutes after I set it up for sale, someone downloaded the checklist and purchased the labels.

 Lessons Learned

1. Linking AdSense to my Analytics made a difference.

Since I started monetizing A Mom In Training, I would see a trickle of pennies every month. It’s not something I paid much attention to, but since I linked AdSense to Analytics, I immediately noticed a huge difference the following day.

I have ads in three places on my blog ~ at the very top of the blog, at the end of a blog post, and on the side bar. These seem to be working very well so far as they aren’t a huge distraction to my readers when they’re consuming my content.

2. Pinterest works.

You’ll see in my Traffic Report below that Pinterest is my number 1 traffic source. Two of my posts have gone viral {at least, they’re viral in my eyes}, and they are How I Organize My Household’s Important Papers and How To Make Cute Labels in Microsoft Word. I tried to make pretty pictures associated with each post specifically for Pinterest, and noticed the payoff within a month or so. I plan on returning to previous posts to give them pretty pictures as well and see how they perform on Pinterest.

Three Legs of Blog Income

  1. Affiliate Income – $1.36
  2. Ad Revenue – $14.39
  3. Product Sales – $1.00

Email Subscriber Stats

  • 77 New Subscribers
  • 149 Total Subscribers

I really focused on emails in June. I’ve heard over and over again that having an email list is one of the most important things a blogger can have. It’s more important than any social media following in fact. Reason: if one day Facebook {for example} were to die, you wouldn’t be able to contact your followers. But with an email list, you can simply send them an email to communicate with them!

I have multiple sign up forms on my site. One in the header, one at the bottom of each blog post, and an exit pop up. I was verrrry hesitant about adding the pop up, but so many people have said that it works for them, so I’m experimenting with it. What do you think about it? Drag your mouse as if you were gonna close this window to see the pop up.

In July, I’m making my email list a priority above all else not only because of the reasons listed above, but because those subscribers signed up for a reason. It was their way of raising their hand saying, “Yes, I’m interested in what you have to say!” So they deserve to have my attention first and foremost!

RPM

RPM stands for Revenue Per Thousand views. This basically measures the overall effectiveness of a blog and is useful when comparing blogs to each other, even if they have enormously different traffic statistics. I’ve seen many blogs use the RPM metric in their income reports, and thought it would be useful to include it in mine.

June 2015 RPM: $1.44

Let’s recap…

Gross Income: $16.75
Net Income: -$39.55
Pageviews: 11,946

Updates!

Keep your eyes open for the following that are coming to my blog in July!

I love video. I’ve actually been recording our family life nearly every single day in the month of June and I post them as unlisted videos on YouTube so we can watch them in the future. In May, I saw a vlog I put together during our first wedding anniversary where we spent it at Disneyland. That video brought back a flood of memories, and I loved the feeling I had when I watched it. I showed it to Aaron and he had the same feelings come back, and agreed that making these vlogs was something worth doing.

So each week I’ll be posting a 2 to 3 minute video with snippets of my vlogs, summarizing how our week went! I’d love to share them with you! You can find my vlogs right here.

Lately, people have been asking me about how they can start blogs that look like mine. I can’t even tell you how excited I get when someone tells me that they wanna start a blog! I thinks blogs are such an awesome creative outlet for people to express their ideas, projects, crafts, business, etc!

Because I’ve been receiving these bloggy questions quite often now, I created a page dedicated to it: How To Start A Blog. I’m currently in the process of creating a challenge for those who wanna start their own blogs, too! *squeal!!!*

Thank you so much for all the support and encouragement! I hope this report helped inspire you to start your own blog, or if you already have one, to encourage you to continue and not give up!
