How to Start a Blog

So you wanna start a blog? Congratulations!!! I absolutely LOVE it when new blogs arise because I love seeing what ideas and information people have to share!

A Step-by-Step Guide to Help You Start Your Own Blog

There are literally thousands of tutorials that talk about how to start a blog. I could easily redirect you to any of the sites I’ve seen, but then you’d be following the instructions of someone who you don’t even know… or trust.

Since you’re an avid reader of A Mom In Training {thank you!}, I’m removing the fear, stress, and anxiety that comes along with starting a blog, and teaching you right here on this page how to get your very own blog up and running before your next load of laundry is done. Seriously!

Before you get started with anything {and I mean anything}, think long and hard about what you want the name of your blog to be called. This is the name that will be associated with you wherever you go, so take some time to really put some thought into it. Here are some tips to help when considering a blog name:

  • Are there any keywords you can include?
  • Does the name look good when spelled out in URL format? {More on this in a minute.}
  • Does the name include any brand names in it? {This is a bad idea… more on this later, too.}
  • Does the name state what your blog is about?
  • Are there similar blog names closely related to what you wanna name yours? {I’ll explain in a bit.}

Regarding the second bullet point: Consider how your blog name will look when in URL format ( It is easily readable? For example, sometimes URLs can look like they say something completely different than the intended name. A good example is a popular local news station where I live, Hawaii News Now. Their URL is, but when I look at it in the URL bar, it looks like “Hawaii New Snow.” I’ve heard of some pretty bad ones {embarrassingly bad}, so I advise you to consider how your blog’s name will look like in URL format.

Regarding the third bullet point: Let’s say you wanna start a blog about selling on eBay. You say to yourself, “Hey, I think it’d be great to include the name eBay in my URL so that people will recognize immediately what my site is all about!” Please save yourself from any future trouble. Oftentimes, companies don’t like it when sites who aren’t affiliated with their brand use their names in their URLs. If eBay were to discover your blog with their name in it, they could ask you to remove it immediately by presenting a Cease and Desist Letter and sue you for it. Not fun.

Step One: Reserve Your Domain {aka your blog’s name}

  1. Go to Bluehost and click the green “GET STARTED NOW” button.
  2. Enter the URL you came up with for your blog’s name. This is called your Domain Name.
  3. Enter your account information. Ensure your email address is correct because they’ll send your log in info there!

Step Two: Get Hosting {aka where your blog lives on the internet}

  1. Click on the Package Information tab and select an Account Plan in the drop down menu. I highly recommend you check the box next to Domain Whois Privacy, which keeps your personal information safe (this includes your physical address, phone number, and billing information!).
  2. Enter your billing information then click Next.
  3. The next page will ask if you want to add on any upgrades. I suggest skipping all of them. Continue to complete your purchase.

Step Three: Setup WordPress

  1. Login to your Bluehost account and click “Control Panel Login” where you’ll enter your user ID and password.
  2. In the “Website Builders” section, click the WordPress icon
  3. In the window that appears, click “Start”
  4. In the next window, your domain will appear in a drop down menu. Just click “Check Domain”
  5. You’re almost there! Check the box that says “Show advanced options” and enter your “Site Name or Title”. Choose an Admin Username (I simply used my first name), an admin password, and an admin email address. Agree to the terms and conditions then click “Install Now.”

Step Four: Pick a Theme

I highly recommend getting a premium theme right at the get go. This will save you a huge headache later on down the line.

  1. Get Genesis. That’s what this site runs on. There are others out there, but I haven’t had any problems with Genesis.
  2. Once you’re set up with Genesis, you can choose a free or premium theme. This site is using the Modern Blogger Pro theme.
