Books I’ve Been Loving Lately

Is a good book not so comforting?!? Here’s a list of a few of my favorites. Recently I’ve been listening to books through Audible or the Memphis Public Library’s app while working a puzzle or loading/unloading the dishwasher or making a meal or doing paperwork. Pairing a book with an activity brings me so much joy. Hopefully you’ll be able to find something you will love to read.

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett

My book club read this book last month. It’s so good and thought provoking. You will definitely want someone to discuss it with you, so grab a friend and read it together.

Becoming by Michelle Obama

I listened to this on Audible and you’ll want to as well because Michelle Obama reads it. Listening to her read her book is a delight. After listening to this I’d like to have her over for lunch, but honestly, I’d like to have her mother over. I think she might be my favorite part of this book.

The Good Life by Helen and Scott Nearing

At the start of 2020 I began Modern Mrs. Darcy’s reading challenge. One of the categories was to read a book written in the decade in which you were born. I found this one and it seemed interesting. And, it really was. The Nearings lived an intentional simple life. While reading I felt like they could be homesteaders in modern life, but I had to remind myself this happened decades ago. Such an interesting read.

The Guardians by John Grisham

I read everything Grisham writes. I’m in the middle of this one so I’ll keep you posted, but Grisham is always on my must-read list.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

Oh this book…and these characters…and this story. This book is based on the true story of Georgia Tann the operator of the Tennessee Children’s Home branch in Memphis. You will want to discuss this with someone too.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

When I was in high school I didn’t read much and somehow I missed out on this classic. After watching the most recent movie I was really inspired to read it. Thinking through the time that it’s written made me really appreciate how cutting edge Alcott was for her time.

Educated by Tara Westover

Oh this book…we actually listened to this with our guys several months ago. It’s still a book that I think about. Anytime someone mentions that they’ve read it I want to talk it out with them. It will get under your skin. You will dive down an internet rabbit hole like nothing before.

Nashville 1864 by Madison Jones

Our oldest son has required reading for school. In fact, he reads so much for school that reading for pleasure is not really something he would pick to do in his spare time (whatever “spare time” is for a high schooler in AP classes and playing a varsity sport). But this book, he raved over it and put it on my desk for me to read. I haven’t read it yet, but if your 16 year old son recommends a non-fiction book, you know what you do? You read it. I’ll get to it soon.

On the Bright Side by Melanie Shankle

If you want a light-hearted, make you laugh read, check out this book. Melanie Shankle writes like you are having a conversation. It’s such an easy going read and who doesn’t like to laugh?!?

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

This is another book from my book club. It’s very popular right now because of the Hulu series. The book starts with a house {literally} on fire. (I feel the need to issue a disclaimer on this book though. It contains controversial issues.) As you read you will find yourself siding with one character and then the next chapter you be siding with the other. Never before has a book been so appropriately named. Through the entire book I felt like there were little fires everywhere.

Playing for Pizza by John Grisham

If you love sports or love someone who does you will love this book. The main character goes to Italy to play football…and eat. The description of all the food has me wanting to book a trip to Italy.

What are you reading these days? Any good recommendations that we should add to our list?
