Apple Pear Waldorf Salad for Fall!

Waldorf Salad . . . with a twist!

We have all heard of, and probably eaten, a Waldorf Salad at some time in our lives. It is the salad that is usually made with fresh apples, celery, grapes and walnuts with a mayonnaise dressing, and is quite popular in the fall. Recently I have made two or three different Waldorf Salads, the most recent one is this Apple Pear Waldorf Salad.

I decided to add pears and dried cranberries (instead of grapes) to my classic Waldorf Salad after I  bought a bag of beautiful pears at our local Kroger store. Generally I am not a fan of pears, but these seemed to say, “Buy me! I’m delicious!” . . . so I did!!! Obviously, the Apple Pear Waldorf Salad was on the menu that night:)

Making the Apple Pear Waldorf Salad . . .

The most time consuming part of this Apple Pear Waldorf Salad is preparing the apples and pears, and chopping the celery and pecans. As for the apples, I did not peel them this time because I wanted the colors of the apples to shine in this salad.  I did peel the pear. And while the original Waldorf Salad uses walnuts, we like pecans more, so I put pecans in this salad.

I diced two different varieties of apples, Granny Smith and Gala, plus the Bartlett pear. Because of not wanting the cut fruit to turn brown, I prepared a bowl of lemon water to dip them in before making the salad. The diced fruit was then drained on paper towels to get the excess water off.

The fruit, chopped pecans and celery, and dried cranberries were mixed together with the mayonnaise dressing, then refrigerated until serving time. Another plus for this salad is that it can be made in advance. Just be sure to cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap to help keep the air out.

The Apple Pear Waldorf Salad is both beautiful and delicious . . . the perfect side salad for fall, when the fruit is fresh and in season. Doesn’t this picture just make you want to grab a spoon and dish some of this salad onto your plate? It was SO good! And, I’m so glad that I added the pears to the Waldorf Salad! We will be having this many times over the next few weeks, and maybe even months. It would be a lovely Thanksgiving side dish, don’t you think?

What other combinations of fruit or dressings would you add to a Waldorf Salad?

  2. In a separate bowl, mix the Dressing Ingredients together. (I used a whisk.)

  3. Pour the Dressing onto the Salad Ingredients. Toss gently to combine until the fruit mixture is covered with dressing.

  4. Cover and place in the refrigerator until serving time.

Recipe Notes

I made a small bowl of lemon juice and water and dipped the chopped apples and pears in it to keep them from turning brown. Though lemon juice is listed in the Dressing Ingredients, I thought drizzling the apples would help.
