Answer me this, and 4th of July recap

As always, thank you to Kendra of Catholic All Year for hosting this summer long project called “Answer Me This“.

1. How did you celebrate the 4th of July? (Or, for you international types . . . Do anything fun this weekend?)

This year, we celebrated with a festive dinner (sausages on buns, potato salad, green salad, watermelon, and pickles). I didn’t take any pictures of our dinner because frankly I just sort of threw it together last minute.

We also did this…

Because I felt like we should do some sort of homeschool activity. Here’s where I got the idea, and the instructions for this 4th of July craft.

And then we took Miriam to her first ever fireworks show. It was my idea, and I sort of convinced Bodie that we should go. I showed Miri videos of fireworks on youtube and turned the volume all the way up so that she would be prepared for how loud they were, and she was prepared, but we still had a rough time of it.

We tried to leave early at Miriam’s request (though she did love it at first, and there were no tears) but the busses to the parking lot were not running during the show. We waited on the long line of people ready to board the busses, and then when the display was over the crowd stormed us destroying the line and crossing the police tape to try to force their way to the front.

Fortunately there were many police there, who imparted excellent crowd control tactics such as yelling “Stop pushing, little kids are getting hurt” and “it’s faster to walk back to your car than wait for a bus”.

Though we were very close to the front of the crowd, we thought it would be safer to walk back to the cars, and so we did. Miriam fell asleep in Bodie’s arms on the way home. It took us another hour to escape the parking lot and make the drive home, but we were in good spirits and now we know what we’re NOT doing next year.

While we were watching these fireworks Bodie reminded me that they signify “the bombs bursting through air”

2. Do you sunburn easily?

Yes. Not as easily as my Dad who is all English / Scottish, but I burn very easily. I also get freckles in the summer which I really love. When I was a kid I always wanted more freckles, and as I get older my wish seems to be coming true.

3. Hot dogs. Yay or nay?

I’m going to also go with “meh”. Don’t love them, don’t hate them. I prefer sausages or burgers.

4. Have you ever personally set off fireworks?

Mostly I have been a part of groups of people setting them off. I’ve done little driveway ones and sparklers, and watched others do the fancier ones that have names.

5. Have you ever jumped off the high dive?

Yes, many times growing up. Didn’t like it then, don’t like it now. Not something I plan to repeat if I can help it, although I can see doing it one day to encourage my kids to try new things or show them that mama can still do things like jump off the high dive.

6. Do you do anything weird in your sleep?

I don’t know about in my sleep, but ever sine I was pregnant with Miriam I can only sleep comfortably on my left side. I tried so hard to force myself to left side sleep in that pregnancy, and hated it so much, but when I finally got the hang of it I couldn’t break it.

And that’s it! I’d love to hear your answers to these questions too, feel free to join in below in the comments section.
