A Guide To FREE {or mostly FREE} Activities

Hello Christmas!  Is it just me or does Christmas come quicker and quicker each year?  And is it just me or are you spending money turn around?!?  We operate on a cash budget, so we are saving for Christmas all year, but still.  Sometimes I just want to spend time with my family and I don’t want to have to fork over cash.  Sometimes I’d like to make some memories and it not cost anything.

If you are anything like me and are looking for free {or mostly free} activities to do during the holidays, you’ve come to the right place.  I have a short list that I really think you’ll enjoy.

-Drive around and look at Christmas lights.

One of our favorite things to do is drive around and look at lights.  I usually pack a picnic and we drive all around our city.  We also use a Christmas lights scavenger hunt.

-Serve together by hosting a toy giveaway.

You can keep this as small or as big as you’d like.  Clean out your toys and give them away…like in a garage sale, but give them away.  Or, you can take donations and give that, as a family, to the charity of your choice. My family, along with several other families in our church, hosted a toy giveaway last year and we LOVED it.  Plus, all the children that participated were able to give a large check to a missions organization.  You can read more about it here.

-Have a pancake breakfast and tell the Christmas story.

Who doesn’t like pancakes?!?  While you have everyone at the table, share the Christmas story.  Bring in a nativity scene.  Keep it simple.  Just tell the story.  Hey, before you start flipping pancakes, invite a neighbor or two.  They might enjoy this too.  Here’s a post you might find helpful.  You could even pass these out to your friends and neighbors.

-Play games.

I don’t mean on a computer or gaming system.  I mean Scrabble, Pictionary, Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, Clue…whatever your favorite game happens to be.  Now, if by chance you have an old school Nintendo and you need to show your children how to save the princess or shoot ducks out of the sky…then by all means, crank that baby up and show them who’s boss.

-Decorate sugar cookies together.

Keep them for yourself, give them to a neighborhood, bake them for Santa…whatever.  Just have fun in the kitchen together.  Cookies not your thing?  Bake homemade pizza, Chex Mix, salad…skies the limit.

-Have a home movie night.

You know what my children love?  Watching movies of me and my husband when we were children.  They love seeing their grandparents and aunts and uncles and us when we were younger.  They love hearing stories of what Christmas was like when we were little.  These stories are treasures.  So, grab those movies while you’re home over the holidays and schedule a movie night.  Hey, you could even eat the above sugar cookies while watching!

What about you?  What are some of your favorite activities to do during the holidays?  We sure would love to hear from you.  I’m always looking for new ideas!
