8 Ways To Make Morning Routine Perfect For Moms

Creating a powerful morning routine not only sets you up for a successful day, it also sets you up for an abundant life. The first few minutes of the morning are priceless and have the potential to set the tone for the remainder of your day. The quality of your mornings will reflect your results throughout the rest of the day.Having a morning routine may be the key to taking off with more energy, less stress, more confidence and motivation.

And I don’t say this lightly.

Because being intentional about how I begin my day and developing a powerful morning routine have been two of the most beneficial things I’ve done in terms of reaching my objectives, raising my energy levels, and being a positive person.

But unfortunately, statistics shows only 10% admits that they like to get up early; the rest of us do what we can. We each have our own way of doing it, the so-called morning routine, our daily rituals by which we try to perform our tasks as uncluttered as possible.

How my morning routine started

Recently I was reunited with my family after six years. As you can imagine a lot happens in six years.

People change, whether we like it or not.

And whilst having a dinner with my family, someone piped up and said, “I really love the person you have become. You are level headed, so much more mature and a good person. You are a good Mom. You are so lucky to have everything you have”.

Whilst that is nice to hear that from loved ones, what you see today, luck had zero to do with it.

Luck jumped up and abandoned me.

What did stick around was tears, resistance, tantrums and self-sabotage.Not just one tantrum. I’m talking, multiple, major sulking, slammed doors, hateful self-talk kind of tantrums. Mostly when things got too hard. When things got scary as I was leaving my safe and secure comfort zone.

What I have today, which I am eternally grateful for, happened with consistent and focused action. It didn’t suddenly just appear from nowhere.

It took work. Hard work, every damn day. One morning at a time. I look back to four years ago when I first created an intentional, focused, morning routine with fondness and gratitude.

Gratitude that I got my overweight, lazy, complaining ass out of bed for a run whilst it was 4 degrees outside and it was dark as hell. But, damn, it was cold on those early morning runs.

That’s where my morning routine began and over the years it has evolved. Evolved as I learnt about meditation, evolved as I included journalling and evolved when I had my first child. The thing with morning routines is that you just have to start and start small if you want to change your life.

Here are eight ways to create a powerful morning routine.

1. Make your morning schedule

To have a successful morning routine that prepares us for the rest of the day, it must be free of any concern and, for this, it is best to have planned in advance what we will do when we finish our routine.

If we have a heavy activity to face as soon as we wake up, we will not only not do it properly, but we will also mortgage the rest of the day since we will expend energy that we do not yet have. If we eliminate the improvisation of the first hours of the day we will be able to think better about how to do what we are going to do and not so much about what we are going to do. And this is a significant difference.

2. Get up early in the morning

To begin a powerful morning routine, you need to get up earlier than you normally do. Now, to wake up early, you obviously have to go to sleep earlier. Getting up at 5 am. will be much easier than you think if you go to bed before 10 pm.

Now hold the phone you night owls. I’m not saying get up two hours earlier than normal. That would make anyone unbearable to be around.

Instead, start small.

Set your alarm fifteen minutes earlier than usual, then gradually increase it to an hour or however long you choose. I first began my morning routine, getting up just fifteen minutes earlier than normal to do a workout in my living room or a quick walk around the block.

But also make sure you’ve had enough sleep. Sleep is essential for good health. It is impossible to remain productive when having insufficient sleep. So, if you want to get up earlier in order to have more time and do more, go to bed earlier. Stealing hours of sleep to devote to other activities can have catastrophic effects on the goals you have set for yourself.

3. Hydrate yourself

This is a very important point: after a full night’s sleep, our bodies need to rehydrate to function properly. Without a doubt, the best beverage in this situation is water. In fact, in addition to hydrating us like no other, water has the power to wake up our body and mind. And as if that weren’t enough, water even helps us look good. It’s the ideal way to start the day.

If the idea of drinking water in the morning almost makes you wince, consider other beverages that will also keep you hydrated. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, fresh fruit juice, water with a squeeze of lemon… the choice is yours!

4. Exercise

If you want to achieve anything in life, you need to have the energy to create your dreams. No-one achieved anything from being overweight and lethargic.

Get up and get moving first thing in the morning.

If you are starting from zero, start small like a quick five-minute walk. Then gradually increase it when you increase your stamina. Or better yet sign up for a challenge and surround yourself with other people who will encourage you and give you a boost when you need it.

5. Do something you love

Have you ever noticed that the way you feel when you wake up often influences your mood of the day? That’s the whole point of having a morning routine. By starting your day with actions that are important to you, you can give it a boost of positivity that will have a snowball effect on everything you accomplish afterwards.

For a whole fifteen minutes do something that you love, something that excites you, that makes you giddy with happiness. Do it for you and for nobody else. Do it because it makes you happy.

Do you love to write? But never seem to have a spare moment to write the story that is in your head. Spend fifteen minutes writing.

Do you love reading a raunchy romance novel? But are too embarrassed to read it on the morning bus because of the sidelong glances from people? Spend fifteen minutes reading that raunchy novel…. or get a Kindle

Do you love being outdoors walking? But never have a spare moment to yourself after you spend your days caring for your kids? Go out your front door and walk in any direction for seven minutes, then stop. Turn around and walk home. Spend fifteen minutes walking.

6. Learn

One of the easiest ways to expand your world is to read. Read about what interests you. What do you want to learn about? What have you been putting off? Would you like to learn how to kick-ass at achieving your dreams? Do you want a promotion at work, or do you want to learn to live with less?

At the moment I am reading You Are a Badassby Jen Sincero. There have been so many ah-ha moments already and I’ve only read 75 pages. It’s funny, straight to the point and gets you thinking.

7. Be Grateful

If you are feeling like you don’t have enough, or are not enough, this one is for you. When you stop and look around at what you have, you instantly feel abundant and rich. It’s so easy to get caught up in the have-nots, we just plain forget or look past what we do have that can make us feel rich.

One way to be grateful is to write down three things you are grateful for in a journal. My favourite is the Leuchtturm1917 A5 Hardcover Notebook. I write in it every morning and it takes less than five minutes!

8. Dress Your Best

I know this one sounds vain, and all the Moms are already saying, “Girl, who’s got time to put on makeup?”.
But believe me, just do it because you will feel good about yourself.

Even if its just a quick swipe of lipgloss and a bit of mascara. Now that I have a toddler, that is about all I can manage until he is pulling open the cupboard door or slapping my feet to get my attention. HAHA!

Plan your outfits or even better take an afternoon to create a capsule wardrobe. Then you always have a cute outfit ready to go in less than five minutes.

Conclusion

A good morning routine must be adapted to your desires and aspirations. Its purpose is to help you to be more attentive to your needs and to make more room for your priorities. And, even if it’s difficult at first, keep going!

I really can’t rave enough about how in love with my morning routine I am. I feel so happy each day because of it and I know when I skip it, I don’t feel so happy or fulfilled. One of the best things I did to move my life forward was to create a powerful morning routine that includes exercise, gratitude and learning.
